What is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)?

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows the participants to use a variety of fighting techniques in the competition, including numerous striking and grappling manuvers. MMA uses fighting techniques while standing and on the grouns.

Mixed Martial Arts was introduced by the Greeks in 648 B.C. Later it was introduced in the Olympic Games as Pankration. Modern MMA competitions began in the 1920s in America and spread throughout Europe and Japan. Fighters of different diciplines were brought together to determine which techniques were best as fighting in hand to hand combat. In1993 MMA competitions were santioned in the United States with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Very few rules were used intially, however, over the years more rules have been added for the safety of the players.

MMA techniques generally fall into two categories: striking techniques (such as kciks, knees and punches) and grappling techniques (such as clinch holds, pinning holds, submission holds, sweeps, takedowns and throws). Various forms of boxing, kickboxing/Muay Thai and forms of full contact karate are practiced to improve footwork, elbowing, kicking, kneeing and punching. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, Judo and Sambo are practicied to improve ground control and position, as well as to achieve submission holds, and defend against them.
